Snoring & Relationships: The Unspoken Impact 😩
Reading Time: 3 Minutes
We get it, your partners snoring unbearable. Nobody chooses to sleep next to a jackhammer! Do you snore… if you’re that partner try the below tips.
It’s normal yet we don’t often hear how it can affect your romantic life.
Dear Feeling Seen,
So, what do I need to do about my husband's snoring! It's seriously putting a complete stop on our life including time for sex. He wears this CPAP thing which I really just know helps him to sleep, but what about us sexually connecting? How can we get through this because every time I bring it up (i know you're going to say communicate) he just looks at me with a dumb face and always says, "what do you expect me to do."
Sincerely,
Sleepless in Seattle
Dear Sleepless in Seattle,
Rest and pleasure go hand-in-hand. And you sound overdue.
Let’s talk about how to balance your needs and restore pleasure.
Our concerns are with you. Sleep is the foundation to physical, mental, and sexual wellbeing. Plus it’s huge for our development and brain health. A disturbance in any of these areas can cause a domino effect on your mood, learning, and sex life.
Snoring in Numbers: Almost half of adults snore when they sleep. And out of all those people, about 25% being always! 75% of those heavy snorers have obstructive sleep apnea. It's a big deal, it affects ~936 million globally!
Gender and Age: About 40% of guys who are 40yr +, snore a lot. But for ladies in that same age group, only around 24% of them snore a bunch.
Health Implications: Snoring might be a sign of a deeper issue. Undiagnosed sleep apnea has ties to an increased risk of severe conditions such as stroke, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.
Weight and Lifestyle Connection: Around 70% of obese people and 40% of those a bit overweight battle snoring or sleep apnea? It's not only about weight though—lots of folks with sleep apnea also drink alcohol, like around 64% of them. And that makes their snoring even worse
Relationship Impact: The impact goes beyond the snorer themselves. 30% of couples opt for separate rooms. Impacting the harmony within relationships.
You’re looking for a road to recovery and satisfaction. We see you and we got you.
Biology plays an important role in why this is happening to your partner. Men are born with larger larynxes (voice box), in part so the tongue doesn’t block the airway.
Don’t lose hope.
Keep in mind the reasons why you're invested in your relationship
Follow that light.
Stay focused with a positive mindset. Sometimes it’s up to us to get ourselves out of the dark.
Here are a few trusted practices to help you get the power sleep you need
Enhance the environment – play a podcast or listen to a guided meditation
Ear support – wearing ear plugs reduces noise
Consider room change – if this is possible we know many
Listen to music or white noise – soothing machine generated sounds
Positional therapy – improve your sleeping position
Dr. Maria Sokolina, Feeling Seen family friend, feels it’s crucial for partners to be knowledgeable about their health decisions. To form a united front to find the best solution together.
When it comes to snoring and sleep apnea treatment, it's common for medical doctors to recommend CPAP as the primary treatment. There are more options available, depending on severity of course.
Check out Dr. Sokolina’s FB channel, Sleep Apnea: Breathing-Snoring Help for more on various alternatives. She encourages us to be our best health advocate by exploring our options, and consulting with out healthcare provider.
Try not to forget the fundamentals. Walk in his shoes to better understand what he may be going through. Vulnerable emotions could add fuel to the fire and worsen his sleep. He might be in need as much as you. Use this as a way to connect and build.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY
Looking for something other than pharmaceuticals and hardware devices like CPAP? These may take longer, yet they meet your needs for safety and an all natural path.
Herbal remedies may aid mild snoring, but not with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Which is identified by heavy snoring followed by pauses in breathing. Seek medical attention if this is the case.
